  • What Is Bachata? A Beginner’s Guide to the Dance

Bachata is one of the most popular Latin social dances in the world today — and one of the easiest to pick up as a beginner. Originating in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s, it has evolved into several distinct styles including Dominican, Sensual, Modern and K-Style Bachata.

Bachata is danced in a close hold with a partner, moving side-to-side in a simple 4-beat pattern with a characteristic hip motion on the fourth beat. Unlike salsa, it is slower and more grounded, which makes it very approachable for first-time dancers.

At Mutati Dance, we teach all four major styles:

  • Dominican Bachata — the original street style, playful and footwork-driven
  • Sensual Bachata — fluid, body-wave based, developed in Spain by Korke & Judith
  • Modern Bachata — a fusion incorporating dips, tricks and theatrical elements
  • K-Style Bachata — a Korean-influenced style with sharp, clean technique

Whether you’ve never danced before or you’re looking to add a new style, our Bachata classes in Adelaide cater for all levels. Drop-in sessions available every Tuesday.
